Smart Home – Lighting Control
Lighting control is one of the more obvious applications for incorporating automation into your home. Not only can it help you be more energy efficient, but it can also help welcome you home, improve safety and security, and create moods to suit.
Imagine – when you leave home in the morning, your household lights go out. When you arrive home at night it can trigger the garage, outside lights and path lights to switch on, while inside the house, hallway and kitchen lights come on, heating systems start up and you can even set the media centre to play your favourite music to welcome you home.
By arranging your lighting and other systems into ‘scenes’ (e.g. Good Morning, Goodnight, Holiday, Entertaining, Movie), one touch of a button can create exactly the right environment, and save power with unnecessary lights being turned off.
As well as controlling lighting by time or buttons, control lights with sensors, triggering lights to be switched on and off, either according to daylight levels or movement, while you still retain the flexibility of switching to manual control with a c-bus light switch at any time.
Lighting automation can also be used to great effect with dimmers. For example, when getting up in the middle of the night to attend a baby, or go to the bathroom, sensors can trigger the hall and nursery/ensuite lights to come on at low dimmed levels, so as not to blind you or wake baby/partner.
Hosting a special evening? Easily set lighting to emphasize points of interest such as artwork or furnishings. Limit the mingling areas by lighting only the rooms or sections meant for the gathering. And when the guests have bid farewell, press one button to close your evening!
These days there are many options for which light bulbs you use, and now LED lighting is more widely available and affordable, offering some excellent benefits. These include energy saving (up to 80%), and health and safety (less replacing of faulty lamps, as LED lamps generally outlast the current high energy lamps up-to 10 fold). Might have to sell the stepladders… (wouldn’t ACC love that). The misconception that LED lighting is not as bright as the current high energy lamps is just that – a misconception.
“We went through a major rebuild and renovation project. The existing house had very little cabling and lights for the size of it. Chris listened to our brief and gave us a solution that kept both my husband and me happy. We rewired the whole house which allowed for all the modern home technology automation devices. We are also future proofed to add any new technologies.
We decided to use LED lighting throughout and this includes awesome strip lighting in the lounge. What has amazed me is that we have increased the house size by 40% which includes a lot more lights – we are both now working from home so someone is there all the time versus before when we were both working in the city AND within two months of having the system in place our power bill has decreased in the summer months by up to 50%. This makes the return on investment brilliant.”
Our lighting automation systems can even be retrofitted into existing homes, often without adding new wiring!
